Final piece

this traingle is yellow

My final outcome for this project is a two part eye test, that tests the viewers ability to see colour and form. The first part of the final piece is inspired by the stroop theory and the second part inspired by snellen’s eye chart. I think that this final piece sums up my project as a whole as i have incorporated all aspects of my project. The title of this piece is ‘this triangle is yellow’ i decided that this would be a good title because its a sentence i have used repeatedly throughout my project and it also adds a layer to the piece as a whole as when the viewer see’s the title in relation to the piece they will try to see how the title fits in with the piece and I think i have successfully made it just slightly apparent as to why this is the title.

incorporating text into photography

After researching into some artists that photograph ink similar to how i have been doing I decided to try and recreate something similar on photoshop, whilst creation this overlapping image of a couple of the ink photographs that I had taken I thought about incorporating text into the image as the incorporation of text had been a large aspect of this project. The image I created was effective as the two photos that I had overlapped together compliment each other with the light and dark tones of the similar colours and patterns inside each photograph.

Introducing photography into my project

I decided to look into photographing ink after a brain wave that included adding more than one colour to a shape and then labbeling that shape with what the two colours that haven’t mixed together should make; for example a shape filled with blue and red I would label ‘purple’. Then after some experiments with putting two colours together in mediums such as watercolour and acrylic paint I realised that they weren’t as successful as I had hoped for. I then started to think about how I could put two colours together with a medium that wouldn’t mix into a third colour. I thought about ink into water because inks don’t tend to mix for a while after hitting the water.

One of my inspirations for photographing these ink and water images was a photographer names Christiane Zschommler whom I discovered at an exhibition called ‘light works’. – ‘Reflections in water have become the central theme of her photographic work, with the constantly changing rhythm of the reflections being seen to echo the unreliability of memory. The rippling, intensly coloured images showcase the abstract qualities of light and the beauty of every day’. The colours that Christiane Zchommler had captured in her photographs really stood out to me and inspired me to create some of my own intense and beautiful photographs with brightly coloured ink.

Dropping the coloured ink into the water was an amazing process to watch, it almost looked like materials floating around inside the vase that I had used to capture the ink inside. When the ink hits the water it slowly expands and falls down to the bottom of the vase. The patterns created are fascinating to the human eye, there is something that makes you stare at whats infront of you; the pattern? the colours?

This is dog

This idea originally came from a triangle i had once painted onto a wall and left over time after realising i had no use for it, when a peer of mine decided in attempt to be comical to write ‘this is dog’ next to the shape. However if anything this attempt at comedy from my peer turned out to inspire me more than anything…

Up to this point I had only been been writing the incorrect colour or form next to the shape but I had never thought about labelling the forms with something completely different to what it actually is. i also think the writing next to the shape is successful as its quite a childlike font of writing which brings a sense of innocence which makes it easier for the viewer to believe that the artist believes that the shape is in fact an actual dog.

this triangle is yellow

Idea: A series of miniature triangles around the exhibition room with different text next to the shape, some factual and some untruthful. Having a mixture of of factual and in factual messages next to the shapes makes the viewer confused and question what they are seeing as some of what they have seen is correct adding a layer of ambiguity to the piece as a whole.

The most unsuccessful part about this piece is the non precise lines of the triangle, this has been a reoccurring problem throughout my experiments with hand drawn triangles especially being painted onto the wall. I think something i could do to improve the shapes lines and edges is to perhaps use photoshop to create equal sides of the shapes.

The relationship between form and colour

The existence of some intrinsic relationship between specific forms and specific colours has been a reccurent dream among philosophers and artists. Adolf Hoelzel held the belief that red had a circularity about it, blue had a rectangularity about it and yellow a traingularity. So if shapes are supposed to be a certain colour what happens when the shapes are different to their original colour? what if we ignored ‘The traingularity of yellow’ and created a series of traingles made with different colours?

As a traingles supposed colour is yellow which is a part of the warm family of colours I thought that I would take colours from the cool family to create a series of traingles with. I think that the traingles create a sense of relaxation as aposed to the feelings a series of yellow traingles would create. I think that this painting is affective and it makes you question the painting, it also has a sort of tranquility about it caused by the use of cool colours.

The pyschology of colour

After some initial experimentation into my project (the relationship between art and the mind) I took a look back through all the work I had created thus far and picked out my favourite parts. Whilst revisiting this old work I realised that what stuck out to me the most was that in my attempts to draw my emotions colour had been a huge part of the representation of my feelings through art, so i decided to furthermore do some research into the psychology of colour..

Colour is a form of non-verbal communication. It is a non static energy and its meaning can change from one day to the next with any individual – it all depends on what energy they are expressing at that point in  time.

‘In artwork, neutrals are used when the artist wants to emphasize structure or form over a reponse to colour’

I think that colour plays an important part in the pyschology of art and is a massive factor of my project; as what would art be without colour? would it hold as much emotion? or any emtion at all? To me personally I believe that colour is the main aspect of conveying emotion through art.

Inkblot art

The Rorshach inkblot test is a pyschological test in which subjects perceptions of inkblots are recorded and then analysed using pyschological interpretation and complex algoritms. Some pyschologists use this test to examine a person’s personality characteristics and emotional functioning. It has been employed to detect underlying thought disorder.

After researching into inkblot art and the methodology behind it I decided that I wanted to experiment with some of my own inkblot art and see what I could create. After creating these shapes and patterns out of ink I took a moment to look at what I could see. Following this I then asked people around me what shapes they could see and the response was fascinating. For example with the inkblot I have created and taken a picture of in the image attached to this blog post ; what one person saw as a cow skull another person saw as a tiny dragon flying over its kingdom. I think that this links with Volkelts view on pyschology and art that it all lies within the eye of the beholder.

The relationship between art and the mind

‘The pyschology of art is an interdisciplinary field that studies perception, cognition and characteristics of art and its production’ For my part three project I wish to study the relationship between art and the mind. Upon researching into pyschology linked with art I came to the relisation that the main aspect of art in relation to the mind or pyschology is in fact art therapy which will be a large part of my project especially within the research aspect of this project. During this project I wish to look into the hidden messages behind art, for example what a piece of art can reveal about a person. I will do this by creating art through certain excercises that I will come up with via indepth research. I hope to finsih this project wih a successful piece between art and the mind.
